Welcome!

Hello! Iā€™m Rosie, the heart and hands behind Rosieā€™s Casting Studio, based in Paraparaumu, New Zealand.

I specialise in creating treasured family keepsakes.

In 2019 my son was born 3 months prematurely. Weighing less than a kilogram, and still in an incubator, I had his little hand and foot cast. Those tiny casts became my most treasured possessionsā€¦and inspired me to start my own business.

Time is elusive, isn't it? One moment, they're tiny bundles in our arms; the next, they're exploring the world on their own. My dream is to help you never forget a single detail.

From framed to freestanding, fingers to toes, each piece is lovingly crafted and uniquely yours to treasure.

Iā€™d love to create something special for you. Thanks so much for considering me!

What to Expect

  • If youā€™re ready to book - Iā€™m ready for you! If youā€™re currently pregnant, book your appointment 3-4 weeks after your due date. Once youā€™ve booked, youā€™ll be sent an email with all the info youā€™ll need.

  • You donā€™t have to decide exactly what youā€™d like to get done before your appointment, but a general idea is really helpful! At your appointment youā€™ll get to see samples, but in the meantime checkout my Gallery and Instagram for inspiration.

  • My studio is based in Paraparaumu, about 40 mins from Wellington CBD, and appointments take around 1 hour. Youā€™ll be welcomed inside, offered a drink, and made comfortable.

Weā€™ll have a chat about the different keepsake design options, and Iā€™ll guide you through making decisions on the finishing options available. There will be samples for you to see up close, and Iā€™ll explain the mould making process to you before we begin.

  • I will be dressed in my best apron mixing up a special concoction of alginate and water. Alginate is a seaweed-based material which is hypo-allergenic and safe to use on the most delicate skin ā€“ it is even safe in the mouth as it is most commonly used in dentistry for taking teeth impressions. The alginate is nice and warm, has a consistency similar to thick custard, and takes less than a minute to set.

  • Your little one might be awake or asleep. Either is fine! I will gently moisturise their hands and feet and place them into the alginate mixture to set - which takes up to a minute. The mixture is warm, and sometimes they donā€™t even notice Iā€™m doing it. Iā€™ll take as many moulds needed - itā€™s all part of the experience!

  • Once the alginate has set, the consistency becomes rubbery. I will gently wriggle your babyā€™s hand or foot to break the seal of the mould, and it will slip right out. Sometimes there is some alginate residue leftover on your babyā€™s skin which I will wipe away.

  • Thatā€™s your part done, now itā€™s over to me to finish your keepsake according to what youā€™ve chosen.

Each cast goes through a whole series of stages (drying, refining, sanding, priming, painting, varnishing, framing, photographing, and packaging) which takes around 12 weeks.

As soon as your keepsake is finished, Iā€™ll email you to arrange collection.
