What is Lifecasting?
Today, we are taking back to basics…
What exactly is Lifecasting?
Lifecasting is the process of creating a three-dimensional copy of the human body, through the use of moulding and casting techniques. Think of it as freezing a moment in time, but instead of a photograph, its a physical sculpture.
How does it work?
Artists use a special mould making material to create detailed moulds of their model, which are then filled with silicone, plaster, or resin to replicate the original form.
What is it used for?
Lifecasting has MANY different applications. It is regularly practiced in the special effects industry, where it is used in the creation of props for film and TV. It also has medical purposes for things such as prostheses and dentures..and of course it’s also found its way into the niche market of personalised genital sculptures, and wearables.
Lifecasting has become popular in recent decades, particularly with pregnancy women choosing to have their belly cast, and then to capture their newborn hands and feet, creating a family heirloom that is treasured. It’s also often used in memorial circumstances to, casting the hands and faces of adults and babies who have died, providing their families with a tangible memory of their existence.
